Thankfully, the majority of the prints from Van Gogh’s collection were never separated. The Van Gogh Museum is home to no less than 512 of these prints. However, lots of prints – probably about 100 – did go missing.
Van Gogh swapped the prints with other artists with whom he was acquainted. For example, Emile Bernard wrote that he received ‘a good many’ in exchange for his own work. The brothers Theo and Vincent van Gogh also gave away numerous prints, to their sister Willemien, for example.
We know where in the world several of the prints owned by Van Gogh ended up – for example, in museums or with descendants of previous owners.
